  1. Toochi,

I enjoyed your post. I especially liked the notion of not judging a book by the cover as it relates to hiring A-players for your team. I agree that many essential skills cannot be taught. However, having people on your team who possess those skills can determine the success or failure of a start-up business. Good information.

  2. Toochi,

I’ve been a part of some interviews at work in the past. Our latest team member was up against one other candidate. The other candidate nailed every part of the job description but had an attitude that we all felt would not fit into our team. The candidate that ended up getting hired was lacking a few of the job description points but was eager to learn and use other non-teachable skills that have benefitted the team greatly this last two years. So I agree to not judge a person by their cover and dig deeper into the skills they possess and hopefully find a perfect fit for your team.

  3. Hi Toochi,

I definitely learn new things when reading your posts. I didn’t know that “A single bad hire can cost up to $50, 000 or more.” This does make you really want to think hard about potential employees. I agree that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. There are always gems where we least expect them. Tell me, what do you mean by settling for “sub-par” players?

  4. Toochi,

It was mind-blowing to read that a single bad hire can cost $50,000! Thanks for the good information. I agree that diversity can make your company better and thinking outside of the box to find those A-players is critical. Every hire is important and with a proper system in place, hopefully one can get enough information to make a good decision for the success of the business.

    Nice job,
    Danielle
